Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Umar says that a woman will pray in three garments.

Hazrat Mak'hool narrates that Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) was asked, "In how many garments should a woman perform prayer?" She replied, "Go to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and ask him, then come back to me." The questioner went to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him. He replied, "She should perform prayer in a fully covering shirt and a scarf." The questioner went back and informed Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and she said, "He has spoken correctly."

Hazrat Ubaidullah Khawlani narrates that I saw Ummul Momineen Hazrat Maymunah praying in such a large shirt that it was completely wrapped around her, and she had placed a part of the sleeve on her head. The narrator says that Hazrat Ubaidullah Khawlani was under the guardianship of Hazrat Maymunah as a young child.

Hazrat Ubaidullah Khawlani narrates that Ummul Momineen Hazrat Maymunah offered prayer in a large shirt and a sheet.

Hazrat Muhammad bin Zaid says that my mother asked Ummul Momineen Hazrat Umm Salamah: "In what should a woman perform prayer?" She replied: "In a complete covering sheet that also covers her feet, and in a scarf."

Hazrat Umm Salamah narrates that a woman will perform prayer in a complete covering sheet and a headscarf.

Hazrat Bishr asked Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) how many garments a woman should wear while performing prayer. He replied: A shirt and a sheet.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that a woman will perform prayer in her complete clothing, that is, a shirt, a sheet, and a scarf.

Muhammad narrates that Hazrat Ubaidah said that a woman will pray in a shirt, a sheet, and a "haqu." The narrator says that I asked Hazrat Ash'ath, "What are these sheets?" He replied, "A sheet is that which covers the body." I asked, "What is this 'haqu'?" He replied, "The Ansar used to call the izar (lower garment) 'haqu'."

Hazrat Ibn Sirin says that a woman will pray in three garments.

Hazrat Ibn Sirin states that it is recommended for a woman to perform prayer in three garments: a shirt, a sheet, and a lower garment.

Ibrahim allowed a woman to pray in a shirt and a sheet.

Hazrat Hisham says that a woman said to my father that I am a pregnant woman. It is difficult for me to pray in a belt (a waistband tied around the waist), so can I pray in a shirt and a sheet? He said, yes, you can pray.

Hazrat Ikrimah says that a woman will perform prayer in a shirt, a scarf, and a stitched sheet.

Hazrat Jabir bin Zaid says that a woman will pray in a thick shirt and a thick sheet.

Hazrat Ata says that a woman will pray in a shirt and a sheet.

Hazrat Sha’bah says that I asked Hazrat Hakam about this matter, so he said that she should pray in a shirt and a sheet. I asked Hazrat Hammad, so he said that she should pray in a shirt and a scarf with which she covers her head.

Hazrat Mujahid says that a woman will not perform prayer in less than four garments.

Hazrat Mu'adhah narrates that Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) was praying in a shirt and a sheet when her maid came and put another garment over her.
