Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Are you not able, after offering the obligatory prayer, to move forward, backward, or to your right or left and then offer the voluntary (nafl) prayers?"

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) says that for offering Nafl prayers, one should move forward or backward.

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), Ibn Zubair, Abu Saeed, and Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to say that a person should not perform voluntary prayers (nafl) until he moves from the place where he has performed the obligatory prayer.

Hazrat Aamir says that a person should not offer nafl (voluntary) prayers until he has moved one or two steps forward or backward.

Hazrat Hisham says that when my father performed any obligatory prayer, he would move away from that place and recite tasbih.
