Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Muhammad says that once an amir delivered a sermon for a very long time, so I burst a boil on my hand from which blood started to flow. Using this as an excuse, I got up (so that I could go and perform my prayer). Meanwhile, his guards caught hold of me. But I kept on walking and went outside.

Hazrat Abdul Wahid bin Sabrah says that Hazrat Salim once told Hazrat Qasim bin Muhammad that when our leader came to us and led us in the Friday prayer, he kept delivering a sermon and reading letters for so long that the time for Friday prayer passed, but he did not descend and lead the prayer. Upon hearing this, Hazrat Qasim asked him, "Then did you not stand up and perform your prayer?" Salim said, "No, by God! I was afraid that people would say that one of the descendants of Umar did this." He asked, "Did you not perform your prayer sitting?" Salim said, "No." Hazrat Qasim asked, "Did you not even perform your prayer by gesture?" He said, "No." Then Hazrat Salim told that he kept delivering the sermon and reading the letter until even the time for Asr prayer passed, but he did not descend and lead the prayer. Hazrat Qasim asked him, "Did you not stand up and perform your prayer?" He said, "No." Qasim asked, "Did you not even perform your prayer sitting?" He said, "No." Qasim asked, "Did you not even perform your prayer by gesture?" He said, "No."

Hazrat Abu Bakr bin Amr bin Utbah Zahri narrates that Hajjaj delayed the Friday prayer. When he led the prayer, Hazrat Abu Juhaifa also prayed with him and then later offered two more rak‘ahs. Then he said, "O Abu Bakr! I make you a witness that this is the Asr prayer."

Hazrat Ibrahim bin Muhajir says that Hajjaj used to delay the Friday prayer a lot, because of which I, Hazrat Ibrahim, and Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair would perform the Zuhr prayer and talk during his sermon. Then we would perform the prayer with the people with the intention of nafl (supererogatory) prayer.

Hazrat Muslim says that during the time of Ziyad, I used to sit with Hazrat Masruq and Hazrat Abu Ubaidah. When the time for prayer would come, both of them would stand up and perform the prayer, then sit down again. Then, when the muezzin would give the call to prayer and the imam would come out, they would stand up and perform the prayer with him as well, and they used to do this at the time of Asr.

Hazrat Abu Hashim narrates that once Hajjaj delayed the prayer, so Hazrat Abu Wa'il performed the prayer by gesturing while sitting.

Hazrat Qasim bin Abdur Rahman narrates from his father that once Walid bin Uqbah delayed the prayer in Kufa. I was sitting in the mosque with my father when Hazrat Abdullah stood up, announced the prayer, and led the people in prayer. Walid bin Uqbah sent a message and called him, and asked why he had done so. He said, "If you have received any order from the Commander of the Faithful, we will listen to it and act upon it, and if not, then today you have committed an innovation." Hazrat Abdullah replied, "I have not received any order from the Commander of the Faithful, and I seek Allah's refuge from committing an innovation. It is denied by Allah and His Messenger that we should keep waiting for you for prayer while you are busy with your own affairs."

Hazrat Zabraqan says that I said to Shaqiq, "Hajjaj makes us miss our Friday prayer." He replied, "If you can keep a secret, shall I tell you something?" I said, "Yes, I will keep it secret." He said, "Perform the prayer at its prescribed time at home, and do not abandon the congregation."
