Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ubaidullah bin Abi Rafi’ narrates that Marwan appointed Hazrat Abu Hurairah as his deputy in Madinah and himself went to Makkah. Hazrat Abu Hurairah led us in the Friday prayer and in the first rak’ah he recited Surah Al-Jumu’ah and in the second rak’ah he recited Surah Al-Munafiqun. Ubaidullah says that after the prayer I met Hazrat Abu Hurairah and said to him that you recited the same two surahs which Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to recite in Kufa. Hazrat Abu Hurairah replied that I also heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting these same surahs.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite Surah Al-Jumu'ah and Surah Al-Munafiqun in the Friday prayer.

Hazrat Samurah narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite Surah Al-A'la and Surah Al-Ghashiyah in the Friday prayer.

Hazrat Hakam narrates from some people of Madinah, among whom was Hazrat Abu Ja'far, that on the day of Jumu'ah, Surah Al-Jumu'ah and Surah Al-Munafiqun used to be recited. In Surah Al-Jumu'ah, glad tidings were given to the believers and they were encouraged, and in Surah Al-Munafiqun, the hypocrites were warned and their spirits were dampened.

Hazrat Umair bin Sa’d says that I offered the Friday prayer behind Hazrat Abu Musa; he recited Surah Al-Jumu’ah and Surah Al-Munafiqun in it.

Hazrat Muhammad bin Ajlan says that I offered the Friday prayer behind Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz and Hazrat Abu Bakr bin Amr. Both of them recited Surah Al-Jumu'ah in the first rak'ah and Surah Al-A'la in the second rak'ah.

Hasan says regarding the recitation in Friday prayer that the Imam may recite from wherever he wishes.
