Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abdullah says that after the Imam has ascended the pulpit, it is also idle talk to say to the person sitting next to you, "Be quiet."

Hazrat Ibrahim says that I asked Hazrat Alqamah, "When does speaking become disliked on the day of Jumu'ah?" He replied, "When the Imam ascends the pulpit, when the Imam delivers the sermon, and when the Imam speaks."

It is narrated from Hazrat Ubaidullah bin Abdullah that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: On Friday, whoever tells the person sitting next to him to remain silent during the sermon has engaged in idle talk.

Hazrat Abu Huraira says that if you tell the person sitting next to you to be quiet, then you have done a vain act.

Hazrat Tha’laba bin Abi Malik Qarzi narrates that I witnessed the era of Hazrat Umar and Hazrat Uthman; when the Imam would arrive on Friday, we would stop praying, and when he would speak, we would stop talking.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) considered it disliked to speak after the Imam had come out on Friday.

Hazrat Ata says that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) used to perform prayer on Friday, but when the Imam would arrive for the Friday prayer, he would not pray.

Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib says that the coming out of the Imam ends the prayer, and his speaking ends the conversation.

Hazrat Maymun bin Mehran considered speaking during the sermon to be disliked.

Hazrat Zuhri says that the coming out of the Imam ends the prayer, and his speaking ends the conversation.

Hazrat Humaid bin Abdur Rahman narrates that during the Friday sermon, if anyone says to his companion, "Be quiet," then he has engaged in idle talk.

Hazrat Alqamah bin Abdullah narrates that we came to Madinah on a Friday. I said to my companions that we should depart, and I came to the mosque and sat near Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). Meanwhile, one of my companions came and started talking to me during the sermon, saying that we did such and such. When he talked too much, I said to him, "Be quiet." When we completed the prayer, I mentioned this matter to Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). He said, "Your Friday (prayer) is not valid, and that companion of yours is a donkey."

Hazrat Sha'bi narrates that either Hazrat Abu Dharr or Hazrat Zubair bin Al-Awwam heard the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting a verse on the pulpit on Friday, so he asked his companion, "When was this verse revealed?" When they had performed the Friday prayer, Hazrat Umar bin Khattab said to them, "Your Friday (prayer) has not been valid." Then they went to the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned this matter to him, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Umar speaks the truth."

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever speaks during the Friday sermon is like a donkey carrying books, and whoever says to another "be silent," his Friday (prayer) is not valid.

Hazrat Jabir narrates that once Hazrat Sa’d said to a man, “Your prayer is not valid.” That man mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, “Sa’d has told me that my prayer is not valid.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Hazrat Sa’d, “Why did you say this?” He replied, “Because while you were delivering the sermon, he was talking.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Sa’d is right.”

Hazrat Ibn Abi Awfa narrates that whoever remains safe from three things during the Friday prayer, all his sins from this Friday to the previous Friday are forgiven: first, from experiencing hadath (losing ablution), second, from talking, and third, from telling someone else to be quiet.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah narrates that if someone, during the Friday sermon, tells another to remain silent, he has engaged in idle talk.
