Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Jabir bin Samurah narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver two sermons, and he would sit between them. In these sermons, he would recite the Holy Qur'an and advise and admonish the people.

Hazrat Abu Ja'far narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would deliver the sermon while standing, then sit down, and then stand up again. He used to deliver two sermons.

Hazrat Tawus states that Hazrat Abu Bakr and Hazrat Umar did not sit on the pulpit on Fridays. The first to sit and deliver the sermon was Hazrat Muawiyah.

Hazrat Tawoos narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) delivered the sermon while standing, Hazrat Abu Bakr delivered the sermon while standing, Hazrat Uthman delivered the sermon while standing, and the first person to deliver the sermon while sitting was Hazrat Muawiyah.

Hazrat Abu Ishaq says that I saw Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) delivering a sermon on the pulpit; he did not sit down until he finished the sermon.

Hazrat Abu Ubaidah narrates that Hazrat Ka'b bin Ujrah entered the mosque while Abdur Rahman bin Umm al-Hakam was delivering a sermon sitting down. Hazrat Ka'b bin Ujrah said, "Look at this innovator, he is delivering the sermon while sitting!" Allah Almighty says: When they see a trade or some other unimportant activity, they rush towards it and leave you standing.

A man asked Hazrat Alqama whether the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver the sermon sitting or standing. He replied, "Have you not read this verse of the Holy Qur'an { وَتَرَکُوک قَائِمًا } meaning: they leave you standing."

Hazrat Jabir narrates that once the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the Friday sermon when some camels carrying merchandise arrived. People went to see them, and only twelve men remained with the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). On this occasion, this verse was revealed: When they see a trade or some other trivial matter, they rush towards it and leave you standing.

Hazrat Tawus says that sitting on the pulpit on Friday is an innovation (bid'ah).

Hazrat Abdul Malik bin Umair narrates that Hazrat Mughirah bin Shu’bah used to stand and deliver the sermon on Fridays, and he had only one muezzin.

Hazrat Simak says that I saw Hazrat Nu'man delivering a sermon while standing.

Hazrat Salih narrates that Marwan appointed Hazrat Abu Hurairah as the governor of Madinah. He used to deliver two sermons and would sit between the two sermons.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand and deliver the sermon on Friday, then sit down, then stand again and deliver the sermon.

Ibrahim narrates that Abdullah was asked about the manner of the Friday sermon, so he recited this verse of the Holy Qur'an { وَتَرَکُوک قَائِمًا } meaning: they leave you standing as you are.

Hazrat Yazid narrates that Hazrat Ibn Sirin was asked about the manner of the Friday sermon, so he recited this verse of the Holy Qur'an { وَتَرَکُوک قَائِمًا } meaning, "They leave you standing as you are."

Hazrat Sha'bi narrates that Hazrat Muawiyah delivered a sermon while sitting at a time when his body had gained flesh and fat.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver two sermons and would sit between them.
