Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Mujahid, Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), and Hazrat Ata considered it undesirable to perform prayer during the Friday sermon.

Hazrat Ibn Sirin says that when the Imam comes for the sermon, there is no prayer until he finishes.

Hazrat Ismail bin Abi Khalid narrates that I once saw Hazrat Shurayh enter the mosque through the gates of Kindah on a Friday and sit down; he did not perform any prayer.

Hazrat Urwah states that when the Imam sits on the pulpit, there is no (allowed) prayer.

Hazrat Zuhri, regarding the person who comes on Friday while the Imam is delivering the sermon, says that he should sit down and not offer prayer.

Ibn Aun narrates that during the Imam's sermon, Ibn Sirin would come and sit down and would not perform prayer.

Hazrat Tha’laba bin Abi Malik Qarzi narrates that I witnessed the era of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Uthman. Our practice during their time was that when the Imam would come for the Friday prayer, we would stop performing (voluntary) prayers.

Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib says that the arrival of the Imam terminates the (individual) prayer.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) and Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) considered it disliked to perform prayer and to speak after the Imam had come out.

Hazrat Sha'bi narrates that Hazrat Shurayh would arrive on Friday; if the Imam had not yet come, he would perform two rak'ahs, and if the Imam had arrived, he would sit down, clasp his hands around his knees, and sit facing the Imam in such a manner that he would not turn to the right or left at all.
