Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Hatim bin Abi Sagheerah says that I asked Hazrat Abdullah bin Abi Mulaikah, "If I recite a verse of prostration (Ayat Sajdah) during Tawaf, should I perform the prostration or not?" He replied, "I order you to perform the prostration." I said, "If people see me prostrating during Tawaf, they will call me insane. How is it possible that they are performing Tawaf and I am prostrating?" He said, "If that is the case, then listen: Hazrat Ibn Zubair once recited a verse of prostration and did not perform the prostration. Then Hazrat Harith bin Abi Rabee'ah recited a verse of prostration and came and said, 'O Commander of the Faithful! Just a little while ago you recited a verse of prostration, but why did you not perform the prostration?' Hazrat Ibn Zubair replied, 'Why should I prostrate? When I am in prayer, I perform the prostration, and if I recite a verse of prostration outside of prayer, I do not perform the prostration.'" Hatim bin Abi Sagheerah says that I asked Hazrat Ata about this, and he replied, "Face the Ka'bah and bow your head as a gesture."

Hazrat Mujahid says that if a person recites a verse of prostration during Tawaf, he should perform the prostration by indicating with his head.
