Placing the Right Hand Over the Left in Salah
Hadith 3976
٣٩٧٦ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: (حدثنا) (١) زيد بن (حباب) (٢) قال: (حدثنا) (٣) معاوية بن صالح قال: (حدثني يونس بن سيف (العنسي)) (٤) (٥) عن الحارث بن (غطيف أو غطيف) (٦) بن الحارث الكندي -شك من معاوية- قال: مهما رأيت نسيت (لم) أنس أني رأيت رسول اللَّه ﷺ وضع يده اليمنى على اليسرى، يعني: في الصلاة (٧).
Hazrat Harith bin Ghateef or Ghateef bin Harith narrates that I have forgotten whatever I saw except for one thing that I remember: I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, placing his right hand over his left hand during prayer.
Hadith 3977
٣٩٧٧ - حدثنا وكيع عن سفيان عن سماك عن قبيصة بن هلب عن أبي قال: رأيت النبي ﷺ واضعا يمينه على شماله في الصلاة (١).
Hazrat Hilb narrates that I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placing his right hand over his left hand during prayer.
Hadith 3978
٣٩٧٨ - حدثنا ابن إدريس عن عاصم بن كليب عن أبيه عن وائل بن حجر قال: رأيت رسول اللَّه ﷺ حين كبر أخذ (شماله) (١) بيمينه (٢).
Hazrat Wa'il bin Hujr narrates that I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when he performed rukū‘, he grasped his left hand with his right hand.
Hadith 3979
٣٩٧٩ - حدثنا وكيع عن إسماعيل بن أبي خالد عن الأعمش عن مجاهد عن مورق (العجلي) (١) عن أبي الدرداء قال: من أخلاق النبيين وضع اليمين على الشمال في الصلاة (٢).
Hazrat Abu Darda states that among the practices of the prophets is also this: in prayer, the right hand should be placed over the left hand.
Hadith 3980
٣٩٨٠ - حدثنا وكيع عن يوسف بن ميمون عن الحسن قال: قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: كأني أنظر إلى أحبار بني إسرائيل واضعي أيمانهم على شمائلهم في الصلاة (١).
It is narrated from Hasan that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: It is as if I am seeing the scholars of the Children of Israel placing their right hands over their left hands.
Hadith 3981
٣٩٨١ - حدثنا وكيع عن موسى بن عمير عن علقمة (بن) (١) وائل بن حجر عن أبيه قال: رأيت النبي ﷺ وضع يمينه على شماله في الصلاة (٢) (٣).
It is narrated from Hazrat Wa'il bin Hujr that I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placing his right hand over his left hand during prayer.
Hadith 3982
٣٩٨٢ - (حدثنا وكيع عن ربيع عن أبي معشر عن إبراهيم قال: يضع يمينه على شماله في الصلاة) (١) تحت السرة.
Ibrahim says that a person will place his right hand over his left hand below the navel during prayer.
Hadith 3983
٣٩٨٣ - حدثنا وكيع قال: حدثنا عبد السلام بن شداد (الجريري) (١) أبو طالوت قال: (نا) (٢) غزوان بن جرير الضبي عن أبيه قال: كان عليٌّ إذا قام في الصلاة وضع يمينه على (رسغه) (٣)، (فلا) (٤) يزال كذلك حتى يركع متى ما ركع، إلا أن يصلح ثوبه أو يحك جسده (٥).
Hazrat Jareer Dhabbi narrates that when Hazrat Ali would stand in prayer, he would place his right hand on his wrist and remain in this position until bowing (ruku). However, if he needed to adjust his clothing or scratch his body, he would lift his hand.
Hadith 3984
٣٩٨٤ - حدثنا وكيع قال: حدثنا يزيد بن زياد (بن) (١) أبي الجعد عن عاصم الجحدري عن عقبة بن ظهير عن علي في قوله: ﴿فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ﴾ [الكوثر: ٢] قال: وضع اليمين على الشمال في الصلاة (٢).
Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the command of Allah Almighty { فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّکَ وَانْحَرْ } says that it means placing the right hand over the left.
Hadith 3985
٣٩٨٥ - حدثنا يزيد بن هارون قال: (أخبرنا) (١) (حجاج) (٢) بن حسان قال: سمعت أبا مجلز (أو) (٣) سألته قال: قلت: كيف (يصنع) (٤)؟ قال: (يضع) (٥) باطن كف يمينه على ظاهر كيف شماله ويجعلها أسفل من السرة.
Hazrat Hajjaj bin Hassan says that I asked Abu Majliz how should I fold my hands in prayer? He replied that place the palm of your right hand on the back of your left hand and fold both hands below the navel.
Hadith 3986
٣٩٨٦ - حدثنا يزيد قال: أخبرنا الحجاج بن أبي (زينب) (١) قال: حدثني أبو عثمان: أن النبي ﷺ مر برجل يصلي وقد وضع شماله على يمينه، فأخذ النبي ﷺ يمينه (فوضعها) (٢) على شماله (٣).
Hazrat Abu Uthman narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a man who had placed his left hand over his right hand. The Prophet took his right hand and placed it over his left hand.
Hadith 3987
٣٩٨٧ - حدثنا جرير عن مغيرة عن أبي معشر عن إبراهيم قال: لا بأس (أن) (١) يضع اليمنى على اليسرى في الصلاة.
Ibrahim says that there is no harm if a person places his right hand over his left hand during prayer.
Hadith 3988
٣٩٨٨ - حدثنا أبو معاوية عن (عبد الرحمن بن إسحاق) (١) عن زياد بن زيد (السوائي) (٢) عن أبي جحيفة عن علي قال: من سنة الصلاة وضع الأيدي على الأيدي تحت (السرر) (٣) (٤).
Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Sunnah of prayer is that the hands should be placed one over the other below the navel.
Hadith 3989
٣٩٨٩ - حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد عن ثور عن خالد بن معدان عن أبي زياد مولى (آل دراج) (١) (قال) (٢): ما رأيت فنسيت فإني لم أنس أن أبا بكر كان إذا قام في الصلاة قال: هكذا، فوضع اليمنى على اليسرى (٣).
Hazrat Abu Ziyad says that I have forgotten everything I saw except one thing that I remember: I saw Hazrat Abu Bakr placing his right hand over his left hand during prayer.
Hadith 3990
٣٩٩٠ - حدثنا (أبو معاوية (و) (١) حدثنا) (٢) حفص عن ليث عن مجاهد: أنه كان يكره أن يضع (اليمنى) (٣) على الشمال (يقول) (٤): على كفه (أو) (٥) (على الرسغ) (٦)، ويقول: فوق ذلك، ويقول: أهل الكتاب يفعلونه.
Hazrat Laith says that Hazrat Mujahid disliked placing the right hand over the left hand. He used to say that the right hand should be tied behind the palm of the left hand, or on the wrist, or beyond that. Because placing hand over hand was the way of the People of the Book.
Hadith 3991
٣٩٩١ - حدثنا عبد الأعلى عن المستمر بن الريان عن أبي الجوزاء: أنه كان يأمر أصحابه أن (يضع) (١) أحدهم يده اليمنى على اليسرى وهو يصلي.
Hazrat Abu al-Jawza used to instruct his students to place the right hand over the left hand during prayer.
