Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ibn Sirin narrates that Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud used to recite Surah Al-Fatihah along with another Surah in the first two rak'ahs of Zuhr and Asr, and in the last two rak'ahs he would recite only Surah Al-Fatihah.

Hazrat Sha'bi narrates that Hazrat Umar wrote a letter to Hazrat Shurayh stating that in the first two rak'ahs, recite Surah Al-Fatihah and another Surah, and in the latter two rak'ahs, recite only Surah Al-Fatihah.

Hazrat Muhammad bin Ibrahim says that I heard Hisham bin Ismail on the pulpit of the Messenger (peace be upon him) saying that Hazrat Abu Darda used to say: In the first two rak'ahs of Zuhr, recite Surah Al-Fatihah and another Surah, and in the last two rak'ahs, recite only Surah Al-Fatihah. In the first two rak'ahs of Asr, recite Surah Al-Fatihah and another Surah, and in the last two rak'ahs, recite only Surah Al-Fatihah. In the last rak'ah of Maghrib and the last two rak'ahs of Isha, recite only Surah Al-Fatihah.

Hazrat Abu Darda used to say that in the first two rak'ahs of Zuhr and Asr, recite Surah Al-Fatihah and another Surah, and in the last two rak'ahs, recite only Surah Al-Fatihah. In the last rak'ah of Maghrib and the last two rak'ahs of Isha, recite only Surah Al-Fatihah.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say that in the first two rak'ahs of Zuhr and Asr prayers, the imam and the follower should recite Surah Al-Fatihah and another surah, and in the last two rak'ahs, only Surah Al-Fatihah should be recited.

Hazrat Sanabhi says that I offered the Maghrib prayer with Hazrat Abu Bakr, I was so close to him that my clothes were touching his clothes. In the third rak'ah, he recited Surah Al-Fatiha and then said { رَبَّنَا لاَ تُزِغْ قُلُوبَنَا بَعْدَ إذْ ہَدَیْتنَا }.

Hazrat Jabir says that in the first two rak'ahs, Surah Al-Fatihah and another surah will be recited, and in the latter two rak'ahs, only Surah Al-Fatihah will be recited. We used to discuss among ourselves that prayer is not valid without reciting Surah Al-Fatihah along with something else.

Hazrat Abu Malik narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite (Qur'an) in all the rak'ahs of Zuhr and Asr.

Hazrat Nafi' narrates that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to recite (Qur'an) in all the rak'ahs and kept all the rak'ahs equal.

Hazrat Umar bin Abi Suhaim narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Mughaffal used to instruct the imam regarding the silent prayers that in the first two rak'ahs he should recite Surah Al-Fatihah and another surah, and in the last two rak'ahs he should recite only Surah Al-Fatihah.

Hazrat Ibn Sirin says that the predecessors used to say: In the first two rak'ahs, recite Surah Al-Fatihah and any other Surah, and in the last rak'ah, recite only Surah Al-Fatihah.

Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair says that in the last two rak‘ahs, recite only Surah Al-Fatihah.

Hazrat Ata, Hazrat Mansoor, and Hasan say that in the last two rak'ahs of Zuhr and Asr, recite Surah Al-Fatihah.

Hazrat Mujahid says that the rak‘ah in which Surah Al-Fatihah was not recited, that rak‘ah should be made up (qada).

Muhammad narrates that Hazrat Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) used to recite Surah Al-Fatihah and another Surah in the first two units of the daytime prayers, and only Surah Al-Fatihah in the last two units.

Hazrat Dhahhak says that in the first two rak‘ahs, recite Surah Al-Fatihah and any (other) Surah, and in the latter two rak‘ahs, recite only Surah Al-Fatihah.

Hazrat Humaid bin Salman says that I heard Hazrat Mujahid reciting only Surah Al-Fatiha in the last two rak'ahs of Zuhr and Asr.

The same is narrated from Hazrat Dahhak.

Hazrat Sha'bi says that recite (Qur'an) in all rak'ahs.

Hazrat Abu Qatadah narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite Surah Al-Fatihah and another Surah in the first two rak'ahs, and in the last two rak'ahs he would recite only Surah Al-Fatihah.
