Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ata narrates that once Hazrat Abu Dharr was at a distance of three days' journey from the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he became junub (in a state of major ritual impurity). Then he reached the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), after finishing the Fajr prayer, went to relieve himself. Then he turned towards Hazrat Abu Dharr and struck his hands on the earth and wiped them over his face and palms.

Hazrat Nafi' narrates that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) performed tayammum at the place of Marbad al-Na'am in such a way that he struck his hands on the ground and wiped them over his face, then struck them on the ground again and wiped both hands up to the elbows.

Ayyub says that I asked Hazrat Salim about tayammum, so he struck his hands on the ground and wiped them over his face, then struck them on the ground again and wiped both hands up to the elbows.

Hasan was asked about tayammum, so he struck his hands on the ground and wiped them over his face, then struck them on the ground again and wiped both hands up to the elbows.

Hazrat Sha’bi says that in tayammum, one should strike the earth once for both the face and for both arms up to the elbows. Dawood described the method of tayammum as follows: he struck both hands on the earth once, then shook them off, then rubbed both palms together, then wiped both hands over the face, and then over both arms up to the elbows.

Hazrat Shaqiq narrates that Hazrat Abu Musa said to Hazrat Abdullah, "Did you not hear this statement of Hazrat Ammar, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me on an errand and I became junub (in a state requiring ritual purification), and I could not find water, so I began to roll in the earth like an animal. Then I presented myself before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and related the whole matter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'It would have been sufficient for you to do like this with your hands.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck his hands once on the ground, then wiped the left hand over the right hand, then wiped the outer parts of the hands and the face." Upon hearing this, Hazrat Abdullah said, "Do you not know that Hazrat Umar did not content himself with Hazrat Ammar's statement?"

The father of Hazrat Ibn Abzi narrates that Hazrat Ammar said to Hazrat Umar, "Do you not remember the day when at such and such a time we became junub and did not find water, so we began to roll in the earth? When we presented ourselves before the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and related the whole matter, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'It would have been sufficient for you to do this.' Saying this, the narrator A'mash struck his hands on the earth, then blew on them, then wiped them over his face and palms."

Hazrat Mak'hool, regarding tayammum, says that one should strike both hands on the ground and then wipe them over one's face and hands.

Ibrahim preferred that in tayammum the wiping should cover up to the elbows.

Hazrat Tawoos says that there are two strikes in tayammum: one for the face and the other for the arms up to the elbows.

Hazrat Ibn Sirin and Hazrat Salih Abu al-Khalil say that in tayammum, the wiping is of the face and the palms. And Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib and Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) say that in tayammum, the wiping is of the face and the arms.

Hazrat Sha'bi says that in tayammum, wiping has been commanded for those parts which are commanded to be washed in wudu, that is, the face and the arms.

Hazrat Zuhri says that in tayammum there are two strikes: one for the face and one for both hands.

Hazrat Abu Malik narrates that Hazrat Ammar performed tayammum in such a way that he struck both his hands on the ground, then shook them off, then wiped them over his face and arms, but did not wipe over his forearms.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ammar that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding tayammum that one strike is for the face and hands.

Ismail says that I saw Hazrat Sha'bi, he first struck his hands on the ground, then shook them off, then wiped them on his face.

Hazrat Abu Zubair narrates that Hazrat Jabir once struck his hands on the ground, then wiped them over his face, then struck his hands on the ground a second time and wiped them over his arms up to the elbows.

Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates that when the verse of Tayammum was revealed, I did not know the method of Tayammum. Therefore, I went to the service of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him), but I did not find him. I went out in search of him. When he saw me, he realized why I had come. So, he urinated, then struck his hands on the earth, and then wiped them over his face and arms.
