Is it Disliked to Spit on the Skin?
Hadith 1501
١٥٠١ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا ابن علية عن هشام عن حماد عن ربعي بن حراش قال: قال سلمان: إذا حك أحدكم جلده، فلا يمسحه ببزاقه؛ فإن البزاق ليس بطاهر (١).
Hazrat Salman says that when any of you feels itchy, he should not apply saliva to his skin because saliva is not a pure thing.
Hadith 1502
١٥٠٢ - حدثنا حفص عن الأعمش قال: قيل له: هل كان إبراهيم يكره البزاق؟ قال: إنما كان يكره أن يحك الرجل جلده، ثم يتبعه بريقه؛ فإن ذلك ليس بطهور.
Hazrat A'mash was asked whether Ibrahim disliked spitting? He replied that he considered it undesirable for a person to apply saliva to his skin after scratching, because saliva is not pure.
Hadith 1503
١٥٠٣ - حدثنا ابن فضيل عن حصين عن إبراهيم: أنه (كان) (١) يكره أن يجعل البزاق على القرحة تكون به.
Ibrahim disliked the idea of a person spitting on his boil.
Hadith 1504
١٥٠٤ - حدثنا زاجر بن الصلت عن الحارث بن مالك قال: انطلقت إلى منزل الحسن، وجاءه رجل، فسأله فقال: يا أبا سعيد الرجل يحك إما جسده، وإما ذراعيه، ثم يقول: بريقه (عليه) (١) فيمسحه عليه، يتوضأ منه؟ قال: لا.
Hazrat Harith bin Malik says that I was in Hasan's house when a man came and asked him, "O Abu Saeed! A man scratches his body or his arms, then applies his saliva to it and rubs it—should he perform ablution?" He replied, "No."
Hadith 1505
١٥٠٥ - حدثنا سعيد بن يحيى الحميري قال: حدثنا أبو العلاء قال: كنا عند قتادة، فتذاكروا عنده قول إبراهيم، وقول الكوفيين في البزاق يغسل، قال: فحك قتادة ساقه، ثم أخذ من ريقه شيئا، ثم أمره عليه؛ ليرينا أنه ليس بشيء.
Hazrat Abu Alaa narrates that we were with Hazrat Qatadah when people mentioned before him the statement of Ibrahim and the Kufians that saliva should be washed. So Hazrat Qatadah, to show us that saliva is nothing, scratched his shin and then rubbed his saliva on it.
