Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite the Qur'an in every state except in the state of major impurity (janabah).

It is narrated similarly through another chain of transmission.

Hazrat Umar said that a person in a state of major ritual impurity (junub) should not recite the Qur'an.

Ibrahim narrates that Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud was going towards the river Euphrates and was teaching the Qur'an to a man. Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud urinated, so the man stopped reciting. Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud asked him the reason, so he said that you have urinated. He replied, "I am not in a state of major impurity (janabah)."

Hazrat Aswad says that a person in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah) should not recite the Qur'an.

Hazrat Mujahid says that a person in a state of major ritual impurity should not recite the Qur'an.

Hazrat Aamir says that a person in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah) and a menstruating woman should not recite the Qur'an.

Hazrat Abu Wa'il says that a person in a state of major ritual impurity (junub) and a menstruating woman should not recite the Qur'an.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that a person in a state of major ritual impurity should not recite even a single letter of the Qur'an.

Ibrahim says that a person in a state of major ritual impurity should not recite the Qur'an, and he said that if he recites the Qur'an, then he should also perform the prayer.
