Can a Person Put His Hand in a Vessel after Waking from Sleep?
Hadith 1054
١٠٥٤ - حدثنا أبو بكر قال: حدثنا أبو معاوية عن الأعمش عن أبي رزين عن أبي هريرة قال: قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "إذا قام أحدكم من الليل، فلا يغمس يده في الإناء حتى يغسلها ثلاث مرات؛ فإنه لا يدري أين باتت يده" (١).
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah said: When any of you gets up at night, he should not put his hand into the water until he has washed it three times, because he does not know where his hand spent the night.
Hadith 1055
١٠٥٥ - حدثنا عبد الرحيم بن سليمان عن محمد بن عمرو عن أبي سلمة عن أبي هريرة قال: قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "إذا قام أحدكم من نومه، فليفرغ على يده من ⦗٢١٢⦘ إنائه ثلاث مرات، فإنه لا يدري أين باتت يده" (١).
Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates that the Messenger of Allah said: When any one of you wakes up from sleep, he should pour water on his hand three times before putting it into the vessel, because he does not know where his hand spent the night.
Hadith 1056
١٠٥٦ - حدثنا أبو خالد الأحمر عن هشام عن ابن سيرين عن أبي هريرة قال: قال رسول اللَّه ﷺ: "إذا قام أحدكم من الليل فلا يدخل يده في الإناء حتى يغسلها" (١).
Hazrat Abu Huraira narrates that the Messenger of Allah said: When any one of you wakes up at night, he should not put his hand into the vessel before washing it.
Hadith 1057
١٠٥٧ - حدثنا جرير عن منصور عن إبراهيم قال: إذا استيقظ الرجل (من) (١) نومه فلا يدخل يده في الإناء حتى يغسلها.
Ibrahim says that when a person wakes up from sleep, he should not put his hand into the vessel before washing it.
Hadith 1058
١٠٥٨ - حدثنا ابن نمير عن أشعث عن الشعبي قال: النائم والمستيقظ سواء، إذا وجب عليه الوضوء؛ فلا يدخل يده في الإناء حتى يغسلها.
Hazrat Sha'bi says that the one who is asleep and the one who is awake are equal; when ablution becomes obligatory upon him, he should not put his hands into the vessel before washing them.
Hadith 1059
١٠٥٩ - حدثنا أبو معاوية عن الأعمش عن إبراهيم قال: كان أصحاب عبد اللَّه إذا ذكر عندهم حديث أبي هريرة قالوا: كيف يصنع أبو هريرة (بالمهراس) (١) الذي بالمدينة؟ (٢).
Ibrahim says that when the hadith of Abu Hurairah was narrated before the students of Abdullah, they would say: "What will Abu Hurairah do with that 'mahr' which is in Madinah?" 'Mahr' refers to a rock in which a lot of water is absorbed. Pools of water are made from it. (Al-Nihayah 5/259)
