Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) says that if a person experiences janabah (state of major ritual impurity) in his clothes, then if he sees a stain on the clothes, he should wash it, and if he does not see a stain, he should sprinkle water on it.

Hazrat Abu Ishaq narrates that a man said to Abu Maisarah, "I experience janabah (state of major ritual impurity) in my clothes, but I do not see anything (i.e., any discharge)?" He replied, "When you perform ghusl (ritual bath), then wear your clothes while your body is still wet; this is sufficient for you."

Hazrat Abu Hurairah, regarding impurity on clothes, says that if you see its mark, then wash it, and if you are unsure whether impurity has touched the clothes or not, then sprinkle water on it.

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with both of them) says that if you know that impurity has touched the garment but you forget its exact spot, then you must wash the entire garment.

Hazrat Zubair bin Salat narrates that if Hazrat Umar bin Khattab saw impurity, he would wash it, and if he did not see it, he would sprinkle water over it. Then, when he had full ability to wash it, he would wash it.

Hazrat Anas (regarding the person who is in a state of janabah in his clothes but no trace is visible) says that he should wash the entire garment.

Hazrat Saeed bin Al-Musayyib, regarding impurity on clothes, says that if a stain is visible, then wash it, and if it is not visible, then sprinkle water on it.

Muhammad says about the person who becomes impure (due to janabah) on his clothes and then the stain disappears, that he should wash the entire garment.

Ibrahim says about the person who has a wet dream in his clothes and the stain is lost, that he should sprinkle water on the clothes.

Hazrat Sha'bi says that sprinkling water will only increase the impurity.

A man asked Hazrat Salim, "I had a wet dream in my clothes." He replied, "Wash it." The man said, "The spot is lost." He replied, "Sprinkle water over it."

Ibrahim says: Do not sprinkle water on it.

Hazrat Sahl bin Hunaif narrates that I asked, "O Messenger of Allah! If impurity gets on my clothes, what should I do?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Pour a handful of water on the spot of your clothes where you see its mark."

Hazrat Salim says that I asked Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair, "I experience a wet dream in my clothes, so what should I do?" He replied, "If you find its trace, then wash it, and if you do not find it, then leave its place." I said, "I change my clothes." He replied, "You have a lot of clothes!"

Hazrat Hakam was asked about impurity (janabah) on clothes, so he said: If you see its trace, then wash it, and if you do not see it, then leave it and do not sprinkle water on it, because that will only increase the impurity.

Hazrat Hilal bin Maimoon says that I asked Ata bin Yazid about impurity (janabah) on clothes, so he said: Sprinkle water on it.
