How Many Times to Wipe the Head in Wudu
Hadith 133
١٣٣ - حدثنا عباد بن العوام عن حجاج عن عطاء عن عثمان بن عفان قال: رأيت النبي ﷺ توضأ، فمسح رأسه مسحة (١).
Hazrat Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wipe his head once during ablution.
Hadith 134
١٣٤ - حدثنا (حسين) (١) بن علي عن جعفر بن برقان عن الزهري عن حمران عن عثمان: أن النبي ﷺ مسح مرة (٢).
This narration of Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) is transmitted through another chain of narration.
Hadith 135
١٣٥ - حدثنا حفص عن أشعث عن أبي إسحاق عمن حدثه عن علي أن النبي ﷺ كان يتوضا ثلاثًا ثلاثًا، إلا المسح مرة مرة (١).
It is narrated from Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform each part of ablution three times, but he would wipe his head only once.
Hadith 136
١٣٦ - حدثنا عبد اللَّه بن نمير عن يحيى بن سعيد عن نافع عن ابن عمر أنه كان يمسح مقدم رأسه مرة واحدة (١).
Hazrat Nafi' says that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) used to wipe the front part of the head once.
Hadith 137
١٣٧ - حدثنا وكيع عن أسامة بن زيد عن نافع: (أن) (١) ابن عمر كان يمسح يافوخه مرة (٢).
It is narrated from Hazrat Nafi' that Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to wipe the front part of the head once.
Hadith 138
١٣٨ - حدثنا عبد الرحيم بن سليمان عن يزيد بن أبي زياد قال: دخلت على عبد الرحمن بن أبي ليلى، فدعا بوضوء، فتوضأ ومسح رأسه مرة، وغسل قدميه ثلاثًا ثلاثًا، قال: هكذا رأيت عليا يتوضأ (١).
Hazrat Abu Ziyad says that I went to the service of Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila. He asked for water for ablution and performed ablution. He wiped his head once and washed his feet three times each, and said that I saw Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) performing ablution in this manner.
Hadith 139
١٣٩ - حدثنا شريك عن سنان البجلي عن إبراهيم: قال تجزئ مسحة للرأس.
Ibrahim says that wiping the head once is sufficient.
Hadith 140
١٤٠ - حدثنا يزيد بن هارون عن أبي العلاء عن قتادة عن أنس: أنه كان يمسح رأسه ثلاثًا (١).
Hazrat Qatadah says that Hazrat Anas used to wipe his head three times.
Hadith 141
١٤١ - حدثنا أبو معاوية عن عبد رب بن أيمن قال: قلت لعطاء أيجزئني أن أمسح رأسي مسحة؟ قال: نعم.
Hazrat Abdur Rab bin Aiman says that I asked Hazrat Ata whether wiping the head once is sufficient. He replied, yes.
Hadith 142
١٤٢ - حدثنا وكيع عن إسرائيل عن (ثوير) (١) عن سعيد بن جبير قال: لو كنت على شاطئ الفرات؛ ما زدت على مسحة.
Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair says that even if I perform ablution sitting on the bank of the river Euphrates, I will not wipe my head more than once.
Hadith 143
١٤٣ - حدثنا وكيع عن شعبة قال: سألت الحكم وحمادا عن مسح الرأس، فقالا: مرة.
Hazrat Shu’bah says that Hazrat Hakam and Hazrat Hammad were asked about the number of times to wipe the head, so they replied that it should be done once.
Hadith 144
١٤٤ - حدثنا زيد بن الحباب عن خالد بن أبي بكر قال: رأيت سالما مسح رأسه واحدة.
Hazrat Khalid bin Abi Bakr says that I saw Hazrat Salim wiping the head once.
Hadith 145
١٤٥ - حدثنا وكيع عن سفيان عن عبد اللَّه بن محمد بن عقيل قال: حدثتني الربيع قالت: أتانا النبي ﷺ، فتوضأ ومسح برأسه مرتين (١).
Hazrat Rubayyi' states that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to our house, performed ablution, and wiped his head twice during it.
Hadith 146
١٤٦ - (حدثنا أبو بكر) (١) قال: حدثنا وكيع عن الربيع عن الحسن قال: كان (يأمر) (٢) أن يمسح على الرأس مرة.
Hazrat Rabi' says that Hasan once used to order the wiping of the head.
Hadith 147
١٤٧ - حدثنا ابن علية عن داود بن أبي الفرات عن إبراهيم الصائغ عن عطاء أنه قال: يمسح الرأس مرة واحدة.
Hazrat Ata says that wiping of the head will be done once.
Hadith 148
١٤٨ - [حدثنا ابن علية عن ابن جريج عن عطاء أن النبي ﷺ مسح رأسه مرة واحدة] (١) (٢).
Hazrat Ata says that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wipe the head once.
Hadith 149
١٤٩ - حدثنا محمد بن عبد اللَّه الأسدي عن إسرائيل عن عطاء بن السائب عن سعيد بن جبير وزاذان وميسرة: أنهم كانوا إذا توضؤوا؛ مسحوا رؤوسهم ثلاثًا (١).
Hazrat Ata bin Saib says that Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair, Hazrat Zadhan, and Hazrat Maisarah used to wipe their heads three times while performing ablution.
