Hadith 6621
٦٦٢١ - حدثنا ابن مهدي قال: حدثنا عبد الواحد بن زيد قال: قلت للحسن إنهم يقولون: الصف الأول الذي (يلي) (١) المقصورة فقال: هو الذي يلي الحائط (٢).
Hazrat Abdul Wahid bin Ziyad says that I asked Hasan that the predecessors used to say that the foremost row is the one that is adjacent to the maqsoorah (the chamber in the mosque made for the Imam or the preacher). What do you say? He replied that the first row is the one that is adjacent to the wall.
