Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Abu Bakhtari that when the people of Jamal (the army of Hazrat Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her) were defeated, Hazrat Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said: No man should go out of the army to search for anyone (i.e., do not pursue those who have been defeated). Whatever mounts or weapons are found here are yours, but there is no umm walad (i.e., no slave woman is for you), and inheritances will be distributed according to the shares prescribed by Allah Almighty. And any woman whose husband has died should complete her waiting period of four months and ten days (just like a free woman). The people of his army said to Hazrat Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: O Commander of the Faithful, you make their wealth lawful for us but do not make their women lawful. Thus, the army prevailed over Hazrat Ali, may Allah be pleased with him. He said: Such are the morals of the people of the Qiblah. Then he said: Bring your arrows to me and first cast lots for Hazrat Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, and see in whose share she comes (who is the mother of all of you), for she was the leader of the army. Upon hearing this, they dispersed and began to seek forgiveness from Allah. Thus, Hazrat Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, prevailed over them in argument and proof (i.e., the women of Muslims cannot be made slaves).
