Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Abu Nadrah that in the mosque of Banu Muslima of the tribe of Rabi’ah, we spoke with Hazrat Talha and said: “We had control over the enemy’s necks when we received the news that you had pledged allegiance to that person (Hazrat Ali, may Allah be pleased with him), and now you are fighting against him,” and they said some things of this sort. Hazrat Talha replied: “I was taken into a date orchard and a sword was placed on my neck, then I was told, ‘Pledge allegiance, otherwise we will kill you.’ So I pledged allegiance, and I knew that this was an allegiance of misguidance.” Taimi says that Walid bin Abdul Malik said: “From among the hypocrites of Iraq, a hypocrite named Jabalah bin Hakim said to Hazrat Zubair, ‘You have already pledged allegiance (then why this opposition)?’ Hazrat Zubair replied: ‘A sword was at the back of my neck, then I was told, ‘Pledge allegiance, otherwise we will kill you.’ So I pledged allegiance.’”
