It is narrated from Abdullah bin Umar, he said that Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me while he was besieged inside his house: "What do you say about what Mughira bin Al-Akhnas has told me?" Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "I asked, 'What has he told you?'" He said: "These people want to remove me from the caliphate. If I separate myself from this caliphate, they will leave me, and if I do not separate myself from it, they will kill me." Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "I said, 'Tell me, if you separate yourself, do you think you will live forever in this world?'" He replied, "No." I asked, "Are Paradise and Hell in their possession?" He replied, "No." I said, "Tell me, if you do not separate yourself from the caliphate, can they do more than kill you?" He replied, "No." I said, "Tell me, will you establish this practice in Islam that whenever people are displeased with their leader, they remove him (from the caliphate)? Do not remove the shirt that Allah has clothed you with."
