Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Amr bin Maymoon Audhi that when the time of Hazrat Umar bin Khattab’s death approached, he said: Call Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), Hazrat Talha, Hazrat Zubair, Hazrat Uthman, Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Auf, and Hazrat Sa’d to me. The narrator says: Then Hazrat Umar spoke only to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Uthman from among them. So he said: O Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)! Perhaps these people recognize your kinship (to the Prophet) and what Allah Almighty has granted you of knowledge and understanding. So fear Allah. And if this matter (the caliphate) is entrusted to you, then do not elevate the Banu Fulan above the necks of other people (i.e., do not give them superiority). And Hazrat Umar said to Hazrat Uthman: O Uthman! Perhaps these people recognize your relationship to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as a son-in-law, your age, and your nobility. So if you are appointed to this matter (the caliphate), then fear Allah and do not elevate the Banu Fulan above the necks of other people. Then Hazrat Umar said: Call Suhaib to me. And he said to him: You should lead the people in prayer for three days. These (aforementioned) individuals should gather together and make a decision in private. Then if they agree upon one man, kill the one who opposes him.
