Hadith 39738
٣٩٧٣٨ - (حدثنا أبو بكر قال) (١): (حدثنا) (٢) أبو خالد الأحمر عن حجاج عن الحكم عن مقسم عن ابن عباس أن رسول اللَّه ﷺ بعث إلى مؤتة فاستعمل زيدا فإن قتل زيد فجعفر، فإن قتل جعفر فابن رواحة، فتخلف ابن رواحة (يجمع) (٣) مع النبي ﷺ، فرآه النبي ﷺ فقال: "ما خلفك؟ " قال: أجمع معك، قال: "لغدوة أو روحة في سبيل اللَّه خير من الدنيا وما فيها" (٤).
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dispatched an army towards Mu'tah and appointed Zayd as their commander. If he is killed, then Ja'far will be the commander, and if he is also killed, then Ibn Rawahah will be the commander. Ibn Rawahah stayed behind from the army and performed the Friday prayer with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him and asked, "What kept you (from joining the army)?" He replied, "(I stayed) so that I could perform the Friday prayer with you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A morning or an evening spent in the path of Allah is better than the world and whatever is in it."
