Hadith 39617

It is narrated from Hazrat Sahl bin Hunaif that we were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. If our opinion had been for fighting, we would have fought. This was during the truce that took place between the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and the polytheists. Hazrat Umar bin Khattab came and presented himself before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! Are we not upon the truth and are they not upon falsehood? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Why not! Then Hazrat Umar asked: Will not our slain be in Paradise and their slain in Hell? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Why not! Hazrat Umar said: Then why are we returning after saying such a lowly thing? Has Allah not yet decided between us and them? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: O son of Khattab! I am the Messenger of Allah. Allah will never let me be lost. The narrator says: Then Hazrat Umar could not be patient and left in a state of anger and went to Hazrat Abu Bakr and said: O Abu Bakr! Are we not upon the truth and are they not upon falsehood? Hazrat Abu Bakr said: Why not! Hazrat Umar asked: Will not our slain be in Paradise and their slain in Hell? Hazrat Abu Bakr said: Why not. Hazrat Umar said: Then why are we going back after saying such a lowly thing about our religion, and Allah has not yet decided between us and them? Hazrat Abu Bakr said: O son of Khattab! He is the Messenger of Allah and Allah will never let him be lost. The narrator says: Then the Qur'an was revealed to the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with the promise of victory, so he, peace and blessings be upon him, sent a man to Hazrat Umar and (after calling him) recited this Qur'an to him. Hazrat Umar said: O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! Is this victory? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Yes! Upon this, Hazrat Umar's heart was pleased and he returned.
