It is narrated from Hazrat Bara that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was prevented from (visiting) the House of Allah, the people of Makkah made a treaty with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the condition that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would enter Makkah (the following year) and stay there for three days, and that he would bring only the bags of weapons, in which there would be swords and armor... and he would not take anyone from the people of Makkah with him, and he would not prevent anyone among those who were with him from staying there. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Write the agreement between us. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. These are the conditions upon which Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), has made peace." The polytheists said: If we considered you the Messenger of Allah, we would have followed you, but (since we do not accept this) write instead: Muhammad, son of Abdullah. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) to erase the previous phrase. Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: No! By Allah, I will not erase it. Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Show me the place. Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) showed him the place, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) erased that phrase. And (in its place) wrote: son of Abdullah. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed in Makkah for three days (the following year). When the third day came, the polytheists said to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): This is the last day according to the condition of your companion, so tell him to leave Makkah. Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) conveyed this to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left.
