Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah that a man came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "I am ruined." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "What has ruined you?" The man said, "I had intercourse with my wife during Ramadan while fasting." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Free a slave as expiation." The man said, "I do not have a slave." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then fast for two consecutive months." The man said, "I am not able to do that." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then feed sixty needy people." The man said, "I am not able to do that either." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Sit down." So the man sat down. While he was sitting, a tray of dates was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the man sitting there, "Take this and give it as charity." The man said, "By the One Who sent you with the truth, there is no household in Medina poorer and more needy than mine." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed at this until his side teeth became visible, then he said, "Go, take it and feed it to your family." And (Imam) Abu Hanifa's opinion has been mentioned that: it is not permissible to feed this (charity) to one's own dependents.
