Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Sudais Adawi narrates that we participated in the battle of Ablah with our leader. There we were victorious, then we went to Ahwaz, where there were people from Sudan and from that region. We fought a fierce battle with them and we were victorious. Many captives fell into our hands and we distributed them among ourselves. Some people received one and some received two captives. We also had intercourse with our slave women. When Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was informed of this, he wrote us a letter in which it was written that you have no right to take possession of these captives, release all the captives and you are not the owners of any of them. Take tribute from them according to the amount of land they possess. So, after this order came, we released all the captives. Many of the Sudanese people over whom we prevailed resembled the Arabs. They kept long beards, wore izar, and sat with their legs circled. A letter was written to Hazrat Umar about them, so he said: Bring these people close to you, and whoever among them accepts Islam, include him among the Muslims. When they mingle with the people, there will be no harshness left in them. The people of that region were stronger than them. A letter was also written to Hazrat Umar about them, and he replied: Bring them close, and whoever accepts Islam, include him among the Muslims.
