Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Amr bin Maimoon that when Hazrat Jaunah bin Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) was at the frontier of Maltiyah, he wrote a letter to Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) saying: People perform jihad on different horses, some on a jaz’ (young horse), some on a thani (older horse), and there is no objection from the Muslims regarding this. And some perform jihad on a bardhawn horse, which is not less than other horses except that it is called bardhawn. O Commander of the Faithful, what is your opinion about this? Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) wrote in reply: Inform the riders of the mixed-breed horses, which are not objected to by the Muslims, that there is no (separate) share for them. Take them along or leave them. And as for the Turkish-breed horses, which are pleasing to look at, give them the same share as is given to the Arabian-breed horses.
