Hazrat Muhammad bin Sawqah, may Allah have mercy on him, says that a man asked Hazrat Ata, may Allah have mercy on him, about a person who had been taken captive by the people of Daylam. They released him after taking an oath and covenant from him by Allah that if he sent them ransom, he would be free. They had fixed the amount of ransom. And if he did not send the ransom, then according to the oath and covenant, he would return to them. That person could not obtain the ransom money because he was poor. Now what should he do? He, may Allah have mercy on him, replied: He must fulfill the promise. The man said: Hazrat, they are polytheists! Hazrat Ata, may Allah have mercy on him, refused and said: In every case, fulfilling the promise is necessary.
