Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Auf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) conquered Makkah, he (peace be upon him) turned towards Taif. And he (peace be upon him) besieged Taif for eighteen or nineteen days. But he could not conquer it. Then he (peace be upon him) departed in the morning or evening: then he (peace be upon him) stopped, then he (peace be upon him) started to travel at noon, then he (peace be upon him) said: O people! Surely, I will reach before you, and I advise you to do good to my family. And the place of promise with you is the Hawd (Pond) of Kauthar. By Him in Whose hand is my soul, you must establish prayer and pay zakat, or else I will send to you a man from myself, or a man like myself. Then he will surely strike the necks of those who fight among them, and will take their children as captives. The narrator says: People thought that this person would be Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) or Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Then he (peace be upon him) took the hand of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: This is that person.
