Hazrat Saeed bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) received news that there is a man in Shaam who claims that he is certainly a believer. The narrator says that Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote a letter saying, "Bring him to me." So he was brought before Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he (Umar) said, "Are you the person who claims that you are a believer?" He replied, "Yes! Were there not three types of people in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? Believer, hypocrite, and disbeliever. By Allah, I am not a disbeliever, nor do I practice hypocrisy." The narrator says that Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) then said to him, "Stretch out your hand." Hazrat Ibn Idrees (may Allah have mercy on him) says, "I asked, did he approve of what he said?" The narrator says, "Yes! He approved of what he said."
