Hazrat Shahr bin Hawshab (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that I asked Hazrat Umm al-Mu'mineen Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her): When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was with you, which supplication did he make most frequently? The narrator says: She (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: He (peace and blessings be upon him) used to frequently make this supplication: "O Turner of the hearts! Make my heart steadfast upon Your religion." I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Is this supplication the one you make most often: "O Turner of the hearts! Make my heart steadfast upon Your religion." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes, O Umm Salamah! There is no person except that his heart is between two fingers from among the fingers of Allah; He makes it straight for whom He wills and He turns it away for whom He wills.
