Ibn Aun narrates that the Prophet Muhammad said: When Abu Bakr was made the caliph, Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sat among his family. Then Abu Bakr was informed of this, so he sent a messenger to call him and asked: Do you dislike my caliphate? Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: No, I do not dislike your caliphate. But there was excess being done in the Qur'an, so when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, I made it obligatory upon myself that I would not wear a cloak except for prayer, until I had compiled the Qur'an for the people. So Abu Bakr said: Your opinion is very good.
