Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib narrates that Hazrat Ma'iz bin Malik came to Hazrat Abu Bakr and informed him that he had committed adultery. Hazrat Abu Bakr said to him: "Have you mentioned this matter to anyone other than me?" He replied: "No." Hazrat Abu Bakr said to him: "Conceal your fault due to Allah's covering and repent to Allah. Surely, people are shamed but do not take heed, and Allah, the Lord of Honor, accepts His servants' repentance." But his soul did not find peace until he mentioned it before Hazrat Umar. Hazrat Umar also gave him the same answer that Hazrat Abu Bakr had given. His soul still did not find peace until he came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and informed him: "Indeed, I have committed adultery." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, turned away from him, until he repeated it several times before the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. When it became too much, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sent a messenger to his people and asked them: "Is he ill? Or is he afflicted with madness?" They replied: "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, indeed he is perfectly sound." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked: "Is he unmarried or married?" They said: "Rather, he is married." So, by the command of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, he was stoned to death.
