Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ibn Jurayj says that I asked Hazrat Ata: A man intentionally killed someone and then fled, and he could not be apprehended until he died, leaving behind wealth. He (Ata) replied: The blood money (diyat) for the murdered person will be obligatory from his (the killer’s) wealth. He was asked: Should this killer be imprisoned until he dies? He replied: Indeed, it is those people who have killed him! They imprisoned him until he died in jail.
