Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Zadhan that two men wished to deposit a trust with a woman, and both of them said to her, "Do not give this to any one of us unless we both come together." Then both of them left and disappeared somewhere. After some time, one of them came and said to the woman, "Hand over my trust to me; my friend has passed away." The woman refused until their dispute became very intense. Then the woman handed it over to him. After some time, the second one came and said, "Hand over my trust to me." The woman said, "Your friend came and was saying that his friend had died, and he took your trust from me." Both of them took their dispute to Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). When Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) heard the complete incident, he said to the woman, "I do not think except that you are liable." The woman said, "O Commander of the Faithful! Appoint Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) as a judge between us." Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), "Decide between them." Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "This trust is with me, and you had also instructed this woman not to hand over this deposit to any one of us unless both of us are present together. Therefore, first bring the other companion with you." He did not make the woman liable. The narrator says that people thought both of them intended to take away the woman's wealth.
