Hazrat Aslam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when Hazrat Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Syria, he and his companions were besieged. At that time, they suffered severe hardship. In this difficult hour, he wrote a letter to Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) seeking help. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) replied to the letter with these words: "Amma ba'd! Allah Almighty has placed ease after every hardship; one hardship can never overcome two eases." Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) also wrote this verse to Hazrat Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him): O you who believe! Be patient and urge each other to patience. (__QUR_N__: Al-Imran: last verse) Hazrat Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) then wrote again to Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), in which he included this verse: Know that the life of this world is but play, amusement, adornment, mutual boasting, and rivalry in wealth and children. (__QUR_N__: Al-Hadid: 20) Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) read this letter of Hazrat Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) aloud to the people and then said, "O people of Madinah! Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) is inviting you to jihad." Hazrat Aslam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I was standing in the market when I saw some people dressed in white descending from the mountain pass; among them was Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him). He was giving people the glad tidings of victory. Overjoyed, I went to Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "O Commander of the Faithful! Glad tidings of victory!" Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) proclaimed "Allahu Akbar" and said, "If only someone would also come with the glad tidings of Khalid bin Walid's (may Allah be pleased with him) victory."
