١٧٢٨٠ - فأتيت الشعبي فذكرت ذلك له فضحك وقال: اذهب إلى عبيد اللَّه ابن عبد اللَّه بن عتبة فأتيته فسألته فقال: حرمت عليه فقلت: من أين تحل له؟ قال: تهب أو تعتق أو تبيع فرجعت إلى الشعبي فسألته فقال: ارجع إليه فاسأله أتعتد منه؟ فأتيته فقال: لا، إنما هو (ماؤه) (١).
17280 - So I went to al-Sha‘bi and mentioned that to him, and he laughed and said: Go to ‘Ubayd Allah ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Utbah. So I went to him and asked him, and he said: She is forbidden to him. I said: How can she become permissible for him? He said: She can give herself as a gift, or be set free, or be sold. So I returned to al-Sha‘bi and asked him, and he said: Go back to him and ask him: Does she observe a waiting period (‘iddah) from him? So I went to him and he said: No, it is only (his water) (1).
