Hazrat Ata bin As-Saib narrates that a man from Thaqif’s mother passed away, and she was a Christian. He asked Hazrat Ibn Ma’qil about this matter. He replied: “I personally prefer to be present at her funeral, but not to walk behind her bier. Then he said: Mount your ride and walk three to four hundred yards ahead of it, because when you walk ahead of it, you will not be counted as accompanying it.”
