Hadith 1887
Abu Uthman Nahdi narrates from Sayyiduna Hanzalah Asidi (may Allah be pleased with him) (and he says that he was among the scribes of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him), he said: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) met me and asked, "O Hanzalah! How are you?" I said, "Hanzalah (may Allah be pleased with him) has become a hypocrite (i.e., faithless)." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Subhan Allah! What are you saying?" I said, "When we are with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, he reminds us of Hell and Paradise, so it is as if both are before our eyes. Then when we leave the presence of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and become occupied with our wives, children, and business, we forget many things." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "By Allah! The same happens to us." Then both I and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and I said, "O Messenger of Allah! Hanzalah has become a hypocrite." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "What do you mean?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah! When we are with you and you remind us of Hell and Paradise, it is as if both are before our eyes. Then when we leave your presence, we become occupied with our wives, children, and other affairs, and we forget many things." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "By Him in whose hand is my soul! If you were to remain in the same state as you are with me and in remembrance of Allah, then surely the angels would shake hands with you in your beds and on your roads. But O Hanzalah! A time for worldly affairs and a time for the remembrance of your Lord." He said this three times.
