Hadith 1720
‘Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me, Sayyiduna Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) to the place of Rawdat Khakh and said: Go, and there you will find a woman riding a camel. She has a letter with her; take it from her and bring it back. We set off quickly on our horses, and suddenly we found the woman. We said to her: Hand over the letter. She said: I do not have any letter. We said: Produce the letter, or else remove your clothes. So she took out the letter from her garments. We brought that letter to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). It was written from Hatib bin Abi Balta’ah to some of the polytheists of Makkah, and it mentioned some matters of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). (In one narration, it is mentioned that Hatib informed the disbelievers about the preparations and readiness of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the departure to Makkah.) The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Hatib! What is this that you have done? He said: O Messenger of Allah! Do not be hasty (i.e., do not punish me immediately; please listen to my situation). I was a person attached to the Quraysh, meaning I was their ally, but not one of them. The Muhajirun who are with you have relatives among the Quraysh, because of whom their households are protected. So I wanted, since I have no ties with the Quraysh, to do something for them so that they would protect my family and dependents. I did not do this out of disbelief or apostasy, nor did I do it after becoming Muslim out of pleasure with disbelief. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Hatib has spoken the truth. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! Allow me to strike the neck of this hypocrite. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He participated in the Battle of Badr, and you do not know that Allah looked upon the people of Badr and said: Do whatever you wish (so long as it does not reach disbelief), I have forgiven you. Then Allah revealed this verse: “O you who believe! Do not take My enemies and your enemies as friends...” (Surah Al-Mumtahanah: 1).
