Hadith 1687
Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were in Yemen when news reached us that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had left Makkah. So we also set out to migrate towards him (peace be upon him). I and my two brothers—one was Abu Burdah and the other Abu Ruhm—I was the youngest of them, and fifty-three or fifty-two, or he said, a little over fifty men from my people came with us. Sayyiduna Abu Musa says: We all boarded a ship. By coincidence, this ship took us to the land of Abyssinia, to the king Najashi. There we met Sayyiduna Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) ibn Abi Talib and his companions. Sayyiduna Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has sent us here and ordered us to stay here, so you also stay with us. So we stayed with them. Then we all set out together and reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he had already conquered Khaybar. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) allotted us a share from the spoils of that place, and no one who was absent from the battle of Khaybar received a share except for the people of our ship. And some people began to say to us (i.e., the people of the ship) that in migration, we have preceded you. And Sayyidah Asma bint Umais (may Allah be pleased with her), who had come with us, went to meet Umm al-Mu'mineen Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), and she too had migrated with the emigrants to the land of Najashi. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Umm al-Mu'mineen Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) while Sayyidah Asma bint Umais (may Allah be pleased with her) was present with her. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) and asked: Who is this? Umm al-Mu'mineen Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: This is Asma bint Umais. So he said: The one who went to the land of Abyssinia and has now come by sea? Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: Yes, I am she. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We have preceded you in migration, therefore we have more right to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) than you. Hearing this, she became angry and said: "O Umar! By Allah, never! You have lied. You were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), among you the hungry were fed and your ignorant were advised, and we were in a distant land, the land of enemies, Abyssinia, and all our hardships were in the way of Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). By Allah! Food and drink are forbidden to me until I mention your words to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). We were harmed and were always in fear. Soon I will mention this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I will ask him, and by Allah, I will neither lie nor deviate nor say more than this." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) said: O Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) has said such and such. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No one has more right than you. For Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companions have one migration, and you, the people of the ship, have two migrations (one from Makkah to Abyssinia and the other from Abyssinia to Madinah Tayyibah). Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I saw Abu Musa and the people of the ship coming to me in groups and listening to this hadith. And there was nothing in the world more pleasing or greater to them than this statement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abu Burdah said that Sayyidah Asma said: I saw Abu Musa wanting to hear this hadith from me again and again (out of happiness).
