Hadith 1540
`Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that` Abu Jahl said, "Does Muhammad (peace be upon him) put his face on the ground in front of you?" The people replied, "Yes." Abu Jahl said, "By Lat and Uzza, if I see him in this state (i.e., in prostration), I will trample his neck or smear his face with dust." Then, when the Prophet (peace be upon him) was praying, he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) with this intention to trample his neck, but the people saw that suddenly Abu Jahl was retreating backwards, shielding himself with his hands from something. The people asked, "What happened to you?" He replied, "I saw between me and Muhammad (peace be upon him) a trench of fire, fear, and wings (those were the wings of angels)." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "If he had come near me, the angels would have torn him limb by limb, part by part." Then Allah Almighty revealed these verses: "No! Indeed, man transgresses because he sees himself self-sufficient. Surely to your Lord is the return. Have you seen the one who forbids a servant when he prays? (God forbid, whoever forbids a Muslim from prayer or prevents him from the mosque is like Abu Jahl.) What do you think if he (Muhammad, peace be upon him) is upon guidance or enjoins righteousness? What do you think if he denies and turns away? Does he not know that Allah sees? No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock—a lying, sinful forelock. Then let him call his associates; We will call the angels of punishment. No! Do not obey him." (Surah Al-‘Alaq: 6-13). In another narration, it is mentioned that he commanded him with what he commanded him. And in another narration, it is mentioned: "So let him call his people," meaning the people of his tribe.
