Hadith 1434
It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) that the pure wives of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to go at night to those places (for relieving themselves) which were outside of Madinah, and they were open and clear places. And Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that you should keep your women in seclusion (veil). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not command veiling. Once, Umm al-Mu'mineen Sawda bint Zam‘a (may Allah be pleased with her) went out at night at the time of ‘Isha, and she was a tall woman. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called out to her and said, "O Sawda bint Zam‘a! We have recognized you." And he did this so that the command of veiling would be revealed. Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) said, then Allah Almighty revealed the command of veiling.
