Mukhtasar Muslim

Sa'id bin Abu al-Hasan says that a man came to Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) and said, "I am a maker of pictures, tell me about it." Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said, "Come near me." He came closer. Then he said, "Come even closer." He came even closer, until Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) placed his hand on his head and said, "I say to you what I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): I heard him say, 'Every maker of pictures will go to Hell, and for every picture he made, a living being will be created for him, which will punish him in Hell.'" And Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said, "If you must make pictures, then make pictures of trees or anything that does not have a soul."
