Hadith 1286
Sahl bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was told about an Arab woman. The Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered Abu Usaid to convey a proposal to her. He conveyed the proposal, and she came and stayed in the forts of Banu Sa’idah. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went out and went to her. When he arrived, he saw a woman with her head lowered. The Prophet (peace be upon him) spoke to her, and she replied, “I seek refuge with Allah from you.” The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “You have sought protection from me, so I will not say anything to you.” The people said to her, “Do you know who this is?” She said, “No, I do not know.” The people said, “This is the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s mercy and peace be upon him. He came to speak to you about marriage.” She said, “I was unfortunate (when I sought refuge from you, O Messenger of Allah).” (From this hadith, it is known that it is permissible for a suitor to look at the woman he wishes to marry.) Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came that day and sat with his companions in the Saqifah of Banu Sa’idah, and then said to Sahl, “Serve us a drink.” Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I brought out this cup and served everyone. Abu Hazim said: Sahl brought out that cup, and we also drank from it (for blessing). Then, during his caliphate, Umar bin Abdul Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) asked Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) for that cup, and he gifted it to him.
