Hadith 1263
‘Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I received a she-camel as booty on the day of Badr, and on the same day, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me another she-camel from the khums. Then, when I wished to marry Fatimah al-Zahra (may Allah be pleased with her), who was the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I made an agreement with a goldsmith from Banu Qaynuqa‘ that he would go with me and we would both bring idhkhir (a type of grass), and sell it to the goldsmiths, and from that I would arrange the wedding feast for my marriage. I was gathering the equipment for my two she-camels—saddles, stirrups, ropes, etc.—and both she-camels were sitting beside the room of an Ansari. When I finished gathering this equipment and returned, I saw that both she-camels’ humps had been cut off, their bellies ripped open, and their livers taken out. I could not bear to see this, and my eyes could not hold back (that is, I began to weep—not out of worldly greed, but out of the thought of the shortcoming towards Sayyidah Fatimah al-Zahra and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him). I asked, “Who did this?” People said, “Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) bin ‘Abd al-Muttalib did it, and he is in that house with a group of the Ansar who are drinking wine. In front of them, and in front of his companions, a singing woman sang a song, in which she said, ‘O Hamzah, get up and deal with these fat she-camels at once.’” Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) got up with a sword, cut off their humps, ripped open their bellies, and took out their livers. Sayyiduna ‘Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When I heard this, I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), where Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting. As soon as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw me, he recognized the grief and distress on my face and said, “What has happened to you?” I said, “O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, I have never seen a day like today. Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) has wronged my two she-camels, cut off their humps, ripped open their bellies, and he is in that house with a few drunkards.” Upon hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called for his cloak, put it on, and then set out on foot. Zayd bin Harithah and I both followed behind him, until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the door where Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) was and asked permission to enter. The people gave permission. We saw that they had been drinking wine. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began to reproach Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him) for this action, and Sayyiduna Hamzah’s eyes were red (due to intoxication). He looked at the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then looked at his knees, then raised his gaze to his navel, then raised his gaze to his face, and (being intoxicated) said, “You are nothing but the slaves of my forefathers.” At that, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) realized that he was intoxicated, so he turned back and left. We also left with him.
