Hadith 1240
Sayyiduna Abu Tha’labah al-Khushani (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked, “O Messenger of Allah! We live in the land of the People of the Book (i.e., Jews or Christians), we eat in their utensils, and our land is a land of hunting. I hunt with my bow, with a trained dog, and with a dog that is not trained. So tell me the method which is lawful for me.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “As for what you mentioned about being in the land of the People of the Book and eating in their utensils, if you can find other utensils, then do not eat in their utensils. But if you cannot find other utensils, then wash them and then eat in them. And as for what you mentioned about living in a land of hunting: whatever (animal) is struck by your arrow and you have mentioned Allah’s name upon it, then eat it. And if you hunt with your trained dog and you have mentioned Allah’s name upon it when sending it, then eat it. And if it is a dog that is not trained and you find the animal alive, then slaughter it and eat it.”
