Hadith 1159
`Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that` on the day of the Battle of Badr, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the polytheists, and they were one thousand, while the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were three hundred and nineteen. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw the polytheists and turned his face towards the Qiblah, spread both his hands, and began to supplicate to his Lord, calling out in prayer (from this hadith it is derived that turning towards the Qiblah and spreading the hands in supplication is recommended): O Allah! Fulfill what You have promised me, O Allah! Grant me what You have promised me, O Allah! If You destroy this group of Muslims, then there will be none left on earth to worship You. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to supplicate with his hands raised, until his blessed cloak fell from his shoulders. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came and placed the cloak on his shoulders, then embraced him from behind and said: O Noble Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! This much supplication is sufficient for you; now Allah will fulfill the promise He made to you. Then Allah revealed this verse: "When you were calling upon your Lord for help, and He answered you, 'I will reinforce you with a thousand angels, following one another.'" (Al-Anfal: 9) Then Allah helped the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the angels. Abu Zumail (the narrator of the hadith) said that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated to me that on that day, a Muslim was chasing a disbeliever who was ahead of him, when suddenly a sound of a whip was heard from above, and someone was saying, "Go forth, Haizum!" (Haizum was the name of the horse of that angel). Then it was seen that the disbeliever fell flat in front of the Muslim. When the Muslim saw him, there was a mark on his nose and his mouth was split open, as if struck by a whip, and it had turned green (due to the whip). Then the Ansari Muslim came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and narrated the incident, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You speak the truth; this was help that came from the third heaven. In the end, the Muslims killed seventy disbelievers that day and captured seventy. Abu Zumail said that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that when the captives were brought, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): What is your opinion regarding these captives? Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! They are our own people and relatives; I think you should take some ransom from them, which will give the Muslims strength to face the disbelievers, and perhaps Allah will guide them to Islam. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him)! What is your opinion? He said: No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah! My opinion is not the same as Abu Bakr's. My opinion is that you hand them over to us so that we may kill them. Give Aqil to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) so that he may strike his neck, and give me my so-and-so relative so that I may strike his neck, for these people are the "leaders" of disbelief. But the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) preferred the opinion of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and did not prefer my opinion. And when the next day came and I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (I saw that) he and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) were both sitting and weeping. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Tell me why you and your companion are weeping. If I find reason to weep, I will weep, otherwise I will make myself weep because of your weeping. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I am weeping because the punishment that was shown to me for your companions taking ransom was brought so close to me, closer than this tree (there was a tree near the Messenger of Allah, and he pointed towards it). Then Allah revealed this verse: "It is not for a Prophet to have captives until he has thoroughly subdued the land." (Al-Anfal: 67-69).
