Mukhtasar Muslim

Ibn Aun says: I asked Nafi‘ whether it is necessary to invite the disbelievers to Islam before fighting them? He replied in writing that this command was in the early days of Islam (when the disbelievers had not yet received the invitation to Islam), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) attacked Banu Mustaliq while they were unaware and their animals were drinking water. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) killed those among them who fought and took the rest captive, and on that day, Umm al-Mu’minin Juwayriya bint al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) was captured. Nafi‘ said that this hadith was narrated to me by Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he was part of that army.
