Hadith 1034
Sahl bin Abi Hathma (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the elders of his tribe that Abdullah bin Sahl and Muhayyisa (may Allah be pleased with them both) went to Khaybar due to some need. Muhayyisa (may Allah be pleased with him) came and reported that Abdullah bin Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) had been killed and his body had been thrown into a spring or a well. They went to the Jews and said, "By Allah, you have killed him." The Jews replied, "By Allah, we did not kill him." Then they returned to their people and informed them. Then Muhayyisa and his brother Huwayyisa, who was older than him, and Abdur Rahman bin Sahl, all three (came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him). Muhayyisa wanted to speak, as he had gone to Khaybar with Abdullah bin Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him), but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Muhayyisa, "Respect the elder and let the elder speak." Then Huwayyisa (may Allah be pleased with him) spoke, and then Muhayyisa spoke. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Muhayyisa (may Allah be pleased with him), "Either the Jews pay the blood money for your companion or they prepare for war." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote to the Jews about this, and they replied in writing, "By Allah, we did not kill him." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Huwayyisa, Muhayyisa, and Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with them), "Will you swear an oath to claim retaliation for your companion?" They said, "No." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Then the Jews will swear an oath for you." They said, "They are not Muslims; what value is there in their oath?" Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) paid the blood money from his own side and sent one hundred camels to them until they were delivered to their homes. Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "One of those red she-camels kicked me."
